Description
This is a Kenyon, KS-4 stabilizer, with twin gyros, hermetically sealed in helium, made by Ken Labs. I have used it for aerial photography with 35mm, and medium format film cameras and digital cameras. It was designed for use by the military to stabilize binoculars but it also would be great for bird watchers. I purchased this new and have used it for 21 years for aerial photography only. My reason for selling is that I have retired from my business and at 83 I'm getting too old to hang out of helicopters any longer. In order to sell the unit and be confident I could assure a purchaser another 20 years of usage, I had the unit completely overhauled at the factory. The work included disassembly, cleaning, bearings replaced, wheels assembled and rebalanced, frame replaced, end caps replaced, reassembled, hermetically sealed, evacuated, helium induced and tested to specifications. A copy of the report will be furnished. The gyro will operate 5 -6 hours of straight run time on the battery (included) or run time can be extended by cycling the gyro between shots. A majority of my flights averaged one hour so I have never used the cycle technique. The company says that "They require no special care unless they are dropped- especially if running when dropped. They will provide thousands of hours of carefree use needing no fine tuning." I have not operated the gyro since I received it from the factory except to test it for a few minutes and it ran very smooth and quiet. I have included a photo in the gallery that I had taken in the evening, using the gyro with my 6x7 Pentax, shot at one half second, wide open, ASA 160. It helped to have a very skilled pilot. The gyro weighs 2.6 pounds and the battery 5.6 pounds and comes with a shoulder strap. A battery charging unit is included.Because of the power of the gyro to resist quick movement, a quick release system with a positive set screw should be used. I used a Linhof Quick Release which will also be on auction.
