Description
You are bidding on a legendary Byers Series III German Equatorial Telescope Mounting.  Byers mountings are known the world over for their accuracy and rigid design.  Designed for advanced scientific research in astronomy, the Series III mount provides a solid and stable support of any astronomical instrument, up to 400 pounds in weight.  The Byers Series III has 5-inch diameter shafts on both axes.  The large 18.5-inch diameter polar gear has 584 teeth, while the 15-inch diameter declination gear has 480 teeth.  Both gears are custom made using Byers' precision gear-cutting machines.  The matching stainless-steel worms are precision ground and diamond lapped to reduce periodic error to negligible amounts.  The massive polar drive train will track within plus or minus 2-arc seconds of angle. The top tracking platform is 16" wide and 20-3/4" long.  Each end of the platform has four 5/16" clearance holes on 5-inch centers.  These holes can be used to bolt the telescope tube or other instrument.  To balance the payload, two 50-pound steel counterweights are included for the threaded declination shaft extension.  The counterweights can be easily positioned to achieve balance by rotating the weights in or out on the declination shaft. This mounting can be installed to operate at any latitude between 32 and 37 degrees in either the northern or southern hemisphere.  Accurate polar alignment of the mount is facilitated by azimuth rotation slots and elevation adjustment screws on the mount base plate.   (If the telescope latitude is above or below this range, a baseplate wedge can be supplied at extra cost to tilt the mounting to the correct polar angle.) The mounting is equipped with a Byers Precision Clock Drive that uses DC servo motors to drive both the Right Ascension and declination axes.  The supplied light-weight hand-controller allows the observer to fine-set and guide the telescope for long duration astrophotography.  Both axis guide rates are plus or minus one-quarter of the RA tracking rate (+/- 1 mdeg/sec).  There are two set rates: The slow-set is five times the track rate (+/- 20 mdeg/sec) while the fast-set is ten times the track rate (+/- 40 mdeg/sec) on both axes.  This allows a star on the edge of the field can rapidly be moved to the center of the field. Both axes are fitted with easily adjustable slip-clutches that allow rapid manual repositioning of the telescope to any target in the visible sky.  This is made possible by precision optical encoders on both the polar and declination axes.  The encoders drive the unique Byers Digital Setting Circle display.   The digital readout is designed to display the Right Ascension and declination of any object in the center of the field.  After instrument power-up the computerized display is calibrated by observing any of six preselected set-up stars in the set mode.  Once the selected star is in the center of the telescope field, the display is switched to the run mode.   Thereafter, the Right Ascension display acts as a Sidereal clock keeping the display updated as the Earth rotates.  The upper RA display shows hours, minutes and tenths of minutes.  The lower display shows Declination in plus or minus degrees and minutes.  The six reference stars were chosen because they are more or less equally spaced around the celestial equator and one or more should always be visible.  The display will continue to be accurate until the power is removed.  The Byers Series III Telescope Mount electronics can be powered by either 115 VAC or 12 volts DC.  The estimated 12-volt DC power consumption is 0.8 amp while tracking and up to 2.0 amps when using the setting mode in both axes.  A computer-quality AC switching power supply capable of 12-volts at 18 amps is provided with the mounting.  All Byers telescope products are guaranteed to be free of defects in material and workmanship for one year from time of purchase.  Any defective part can be returned to Byers Co. for repair or replacement.  The net weight of the Byers Series III mount, with two 50-pound declination counterweights, is 450 pounds.  The shipping weight is estimated at 550 pounds.  The mounting will be carefully packed in a custom made wooden crate and firmly attached to a four foot by four foot shipping pallet to allow handling with a fork-lift.
